« Rarely is the
cash-strapped world of independent dance able to afford musicians of
Donkor and Moto's calibre and Compagnie Nyata Nyata should be commended
for bringing such talent to a national festival. » Bridget Cauthery, Dance Current, juin 2004
« Maboungou
révèle une gestuelle encore jamais explorée » Frédérique Doyon, Le Devoir, février 2003
As caught up in the rhythm of the music as always, Zab Maboungou will
explore, "a place for words that only the body can establish". "To
create a choreography," she adds, "is not an act of writing, but one of
configuration, within a precise, fluid measurement of time." In this
context, where dance uses movement to mark time, NSAMU establishes the
place - a plot - where actions and words are inextricably linked. In
kikongo, the language of the two Congos, NSAMU means "the subject of
the debate". NSAMU is also very rhythmic, juxtaposing signs, sounds and
steps. The piece describes a possible path: one that leads from
movement to words.
The piece was presented in Dakar, Senegal during the festival Kaay Fecc
(June 2003), and in Ottawa at the 2004 Canada Dance Festival.
